How I went from Self Conscious to Celebrated with the Broken and Beloved Project
“When I started the project I was a mess. I was self-conscious and feeling broken after my life had changed quite drastically. Today, with a community of women around me, I feel celebrated.”
Written by Sarah Elizabeth
Almost a year ago, back in February, I wasn’t in a great place. My relationship of 4.5 years had just ended and the relationship I had with myself was not helping me get through this breakup. I thought so little of myself and what I was capable of doing on my own. The end of that relationship felt like a complete failure. While I was in that relationship, I was okay with not having everything else I wanted in life because at least I had a relationship with someone I cared about. After it ended, I had no idea what my journey would look like alone or what I even wanted anymore.
With no direction or projected trajectory for my future, I attempted to throw myself into work. It was one of the only ways I could think to cope. I reached out to Mary to see if we could collaborate in any way in hopes to gain more experience as an influencer and build a portfolio of blogging partnerships. That’s when I learned about the Broken and Beloved Project.
What is the Broken and Beloved Project?
When I met with Mary to discuss a partnership, she shared about this project she was working on to combine portrait therapy and the study of boundaries. When she started to tell me about the Broken and Beloved Project and explain how this would impact women and help them change the ways they viewed themselves I started crying. As the tears fell, I felt mortified. I couldn’t believe I was crying in the middle of a meeting(I just kept thinking: how unprofessional!) and in front of two people I barely knew.
When I started crying, I couldn’t tell if these were post-breakup tears or if I was emotional because I was hearing her describe exactly how I felt about myself. Mary comforted me and gently asked about my fresh relationship wounds. I shared that I didn’t really see it coming or maybe I just ignored the signs and stayed fully committed to a sinking ship.
Mary proceeded to share more information about the program and we ended our meeting with plans to meet again. With the information she shared, I needed some time to think about what kind of collaboration we could do together. When we met again Mary asked if I was interested in participating in the program and sharing a first-hand account of my experience with the project. Graciously, I said yes.
What part of the project made me hesitant to join?
I had considered participating in the project as a possibility prior to our meeting but I was nervous about the portrait therapy: the boudoir shoot specifically. Before I got to know Mary I was nervous and uncomfortable with the thought of having such intimate photos of myself taken by a stranger. I was also worried about what my mom or my family would think of me if they knew I had a photoshoot like this.
In the midst of this internal dilemma, I reluctantly said I would participate. I could see the value of the boundaries study, monthly yoga classes, and the community of women on a similar journey as mine. Even though I agreed to participate, the thought was still in the back of my mind that I could always bail on the project and back out of the boudoir session if I absolutely had to. I think the biggest selling point of the project was that if I said yes, I was committing to a full year of focusing on healing and taking care of myself. It also helped that I wouldn’t be on that journey alone.
How I felt during the project
As time went on, I started to participate in yoga sessions, get to know some of the other participants and began my journey of learning about setting healthy boundaries. In the beginning, I was going through the motions and joining the sessions but I wasn’t doing all that much inner reflection. But as I started to trust the women around me and felt what it was like to have unwavering support, I opened up to a few women I’m lucky to call friends. They were there for me when I was struggling with things and they would reach out to check in on me. When I felt like I was in a safe space I was really able to process things and evaluate my relationships and my boundaries.
After a lot of thinking and processing my feelings, I gradually began to take action on some of the areas in my life I struggled with boundaries. I started to enforce better boundaries at work, with friends, and with some family members. As I took these steps I started noticing a shift in how I thought of myself. I wasn’t an afterthought or someone who would always be there for people who didn’t respect my boundaries.
If you want to read more about setting boundaries, check out the blog I wrote on my website, Creative and Ambitious, titled: Here's why you need to set some healthy boundaries.
My advice for someone joining the Broken and Beloved Project
My greatest advice for someone joining this project is to fully invest in the process. That was something I really struggled with in the beginning. If I really would’ve gone into the process with an open mind and heart I think I would’ve seen positive results in my life a lot sooner than I did.
If you’re afraid of doing it because you are hesitant to do the boudoir shoot or are worried about what people will think of you, don’t let fear stop you from doing this for yourself. In the first photo shoot, you will have headshots taken and this will help you prepare for the boudoir shoot. The headshot session was my first time ever getting professional photos of myself. I was nervous but that experience really helped me to get to know Mary better and what the experience would feel like.
Photo from Sarah’s headshot session by Mary Breuer Photos
Leading up to the boudoir shoot I was still nervous but by the time came I was more excited than nervous. I was doing this for me and for no one else! If I didn’t like the photos or didn’t want to share them I didn’t have to. Knowing that was comforting to me.
What I got out of the project
Investing in this process and in myself helped me to regain my confidence. I speak more kindly to myself and I’m less afraid of doing things that make me uncomfortable. It helped me to mend my broken heart and has taught me how to trust other people again.
In the group of women, I was one of the two youngest members of the cohort. The ages of participants ranged from 24 to over 50. Many of the women were in different stages of their life. Some were married, some divorced, some with children, and some with grandchildren. The range of personal experiences these women were reflecting on and shared helped to make the project applicable to participants at any stage of their life.
One of the comments I received a few times from group members was that they wished they had done this project when they were younger. They kept telling me how much this would help me as I get to those other stages of life. Overall I really enjoyed how I was able to get to know and connect with women who I otherwise would have never met.
Celebrating together
When I started the project I was a mess. I was self-conscious and feeling broken after my life had changed quite drastically. Today, with a community of women around me, I feel celebrated. I was reminded of what relationships should feel like and how to choose myself. I focused on healing and loving myself and now I find myself surrounded by love. I have people who want to celebrate my wins no matter how big or small they may seem. This project has positively changed me for the better and I think it could help you too.

The Muscle Behind the Mission | The Broken + Beloved Project | Green Bay Photographer
It’s time to introduce you to the muscle behind the mission…
You know the part in movies or TV shows that portray ones life flashing before their eyes? I always thought that was a thing that happened on the big screen. I didn’t know it could happen in real life until it happened to me. I was sitting at my desk in mid October 2019 searching for a photo to add to my new family magazine I was working on. I unexpectedly discovered the biggest family secret that would turn my life upside down and inside out. I left the present moment as memories of 32 years of life floated in around in my head in the shapes of puzzle pieces. I sat paralyzed as I watched them all click together leaving one piece out and slowly from the depths of shadows in my memory, the missing piece made its way to the light and clicked itself into the empty space. My life, finally, made sense.
This discovery catapulted me into my search and rescue era. For the first time I realized, no one else was going come save me, not because they didn’t want to, many tried, but no one else could heal my wounds for me, even if they were the ones who cut me. My deep dive rescue mission was met with divine timing as it seemed the only way for God to stop me from distracting myself with my favorite coping mechanism of work, was to shut the entire thing down in the year I won’t mention. And so it was. Me, myself and I with all of my stuff and no way to distract myself out of it.
The birthing pains I endured during this journey is what lead me to give birth to the vision and mission of the Broken + Beloved Project. The mission is to facilitate a safe space for rebellious women who desire to live freely in their skin. Over and over women who booked in their photo shoots with me would have similar stories, backgrounds and during their session we would crack them open only to then send them on their way with a few crumbs of resources to help them continue to grow their newfound confidence. I wanted to nurture and connect my clients together and help support them beyond the shoot in an intimate and safe community.
This concept was new, I had scientific evidence to back it up as well as my very own clients to testify that boudoir portrait experiences are creatively healing for them. In order for me to push forward with the vision, I needed to call in the help of our community to provide the financial support for me to be able to pull it off, and boy did they deliver! In two months we raised over $16,000.00 of funding for the project and 22 women were enrolled!
I want to introduce you to the sponsors because they too are making an impact that you ought to know about. Please note some sponsors are not listed as they wanted to keep their generosity anonymous.
Stephanie Van Straten | Makeup Artist + Seint Makeup Expert
I was laid off from my previous job in cosmetics due to the pandemic. After 2 months of being off I new I needed to find a way to be creative and help others again so I decided to join Seint Official where I could help women with their makeup routines virtually. I love Mary’s focus on women and empowerment. I knew this was something I had to be involved with. I offer free color consults both virtually or in person.
Dawn Wilson | The Green Bay Bra Lady
In 2011 I read an article about Essential Bodywear in Family Circle magazine. I was intrigued by the fact that 85% of ladies wear the wrong size Bra. Including me. Upon researching this and getting my girls uplifted I decided to become an Independent Rep. in Wisconsin. A decision I have never regretted. Mary has never failed in giving me the wonderful experience of photography. She has captured and photographed exceptional pictures for me. I loved her work from the time I met Mary at WINN. Essential Bodywear offers Bundle and Save specials along with a 30 Day guarantee. My consult or fitting service is Free.
Dr. Skip + Dr. Julie | Prime Family Chiropractic
We always knew we were going to open and operate our own clinic. When we found out we were pregnant while finishing graduate school the importance of care for our family, our kids and future generations was evident as there wasn't a model that put such a focus on the pediatric and pregnancy population. We've had the honor of helping thousands of patients realize a new path to living life to its fullest and impacting their daily lives by allowing them to see the world in a different light and to bring their mission and existence to the next level. Fourteen years later and now our re-brand to be able to offer our services world-wide - little did we know how big our mission truly was and now how we can impact so many more lives here locally and internationally! In other words... We're redefining what it means to be a roll model and to impact our future generations. Mary is able to catch the essence of our brand. For the past 14 years, we've been told we needed to look, act and behave a certain way. (If we would have followed that guidance - we wouldn't be here today). Everything about us transcends the norm, you can't place us in a box like everything else. What we do brings question and wonderment. It brings what-ifs. It brings life! Instead of always hearing no's, or you can't do that, say Yes and we will find a way! Mary Breuer Photos captures the curiosity and operates with out of the box thinking. S She mimics our brand in that we only want the best.

Amanda Krieschner | Freelance Writer
I started my freelance writing business earlier this year because I wanted to pair my gift for writing with businesses to help showcase what they have to offer in this world and how they serve people and everything in between. Not everyone likes to write and that's where I find I fit in nicely, because not only am I good at it, but it is my passion.
I wanted to work with Mary because I've seen the amazing work she has done for other business owners I know. I also did this as part of the fundraiser initiative for her project and that was so inspiring to me. I feel like Mary uses her talent and gift with the lens to showcase deep down who people are and bring out their light to shine.

Tina Ramirez | Inspired Beauty & Wellness
Honestly, I had never pictured myself in the beauty industry. Nor had I EVER thought I'd have my very own spa-room. But here I am. At age 47, I finished esthetics school, and landed at a local spa, where I fell in love with all things esthetics. Skin-care specifically. It was during that time that I completed the massage therapy program. In 2021, I started to create my "hobby-spa", I did it for fun and began to feed my passion. January of 2022 I made jump to go full time in my own space. It's been quite the journey, but I love my space and love what I'm doing. I have the amazing "job" of helping women improve their skin, and learn to love the skin they're in. I think my mission statement says it best: My mission is that you feel wholly nurtured through restorative massage therapy and bodywork, as well as specialized skin care, so that you have a greater sense of balance and renewal. As you pour your best into others, that you may be overflowing with healing, relaxation and hope from your experience. From oncology specialties to intelligent aging and rejuvenation, my heart is to serve you where you need it most. Inspired Beauty & Wellness ~ A place for hope, healing, and renewal.
While I want to say I was coerced into this, the truth is, I am in awe of this woman, and her work. She has a way of capturing the essence of her clients through the lens of her camera. She has this ability to see something that her client , most likely, does not. I'm excited and cannot wait to see how she captures me and what I do.

Joshua + Amy Woods | Favoryt Brand
I got started in this business because I went bald at a young age and wanted to get more creative with my beard. I struggled to find products that were all natural, but were effective. With my thick, coarse beard and sensitive skin, it was hard to find beard products that didn't irritate my skin. I started creating products for myself and friends and family and have been sharing the product since!
We have always valued Mary's work because she goes the extra mile to meet her client's needs. She's done family photos and more for us and we can always depend on her to bring our vision to life!

Betsy Rawlings | Total Self Defense
Martial arts has been a part of my life since 1998, every time I took a break my life would go into a tailspin. I didn't see it until I met my Sensei. Sensei Blue helped me take a look at my life like never before. Because of this, we opened Total Self Defense in 2012 and have now grown into 2 schools here in Green Bay. It's a different way of teaching and taking martial arts, a blend of old school discipline and new school positive reinforcement that allows us to empower students to achieve success. Believe it or not martial arts is about learning to succeed in chaos, and self defense (punching and kicking) are just the tools we use to get you there.
After talking with Mary, I found she has the same passion for empowering women. There are many tat say they provide opportunities for women to learn to empower themselves but very few to back it up with action. Her fundraiser is what initially drew me to work with her.

Tyler + Ashley Mattek | Ink + Splash
As my full time career, I am a mental health therapist specializing in trauma. I have always incorporated art into the work that I do and I have seen firsthand the beautiful element it can bring to healing that words sometimes can't. I wanted to share my art beyond the doors of what I do as a therapist, and I wanted to make an even bigger impact on our community. My husband and I decided to start Ink + Splash in August 2021, with the intention of spreading joy and happiness, raising awareness about mental health, and giving back to our community.
Mental health, wellness + healing through art and giving back to our community are at the core of why we started Ink + Splash in the first place. The broken + beloved project is a beautifully innovative and nontraditional take on healing through the art of portrait. Meet Abby!
Owner of Fluid Motion Massage
I started my career as a physical therapist assistant working in skilled nursing homes. I advanced my skill level to become a certified lymphedema therapist in 2017 and was soon spending most of my days managing and treating swelling. In 2019 I decided that I could be helping way more people if I had my own business and wasn't confined to the rules and restrictions of the setting I was in. I returned to school to become a licensed massage therapist so that I could have my own scope of practice. I have never looked back since! I am immensely enjoying having my own practice and it is thriving! I offer lymphatic drainage massage, which is designed to stimulate and increase the functioning of your lymphatic system. It is an excellent technique for swelling, inflammation, cellular detoxification, boosting your immune system and energy levels, and providing immense relaxation. People are starting to really catch on to the amazing health benefits of stimulating and keeping your lymphatic system healthy! It is a technique that is widely used in Europe (we are a little slow to catch on over here in the USA). I have since branched out and created my own invention as well, called the LYMPH MOTION MITT. It is a medical-grade silicone mitt that comes with online instructional videos to learn self-lymphatic drainage at home! I want to share lymphatic drainage with the world! Just like we keep our cardiovascular system healthy, we should also be focusing on our lymphatic system! The LYMPH MOTION MITT allows people to do self-massage at home. It is broken down into different segments of the body for ease and time-saving purposes. You can do your whole body or focus on the areas of need! If you have any questions regarding lymphatic drainage massage, please feel free to reach out to me and I am happy to answer them. The bottom line is EVERYONE can benefit from lymphatic drainage., whether you come in and see me for an in-person appointment or decide to tackle it yourself at home!

Owner of Ziva Hill Creative
I got started with my business after learning a lot of small businesses needed marketing help. I realized that social media was a big pain point, and I enjoyed the food industry so much that I blended the two. I still love helping any other small business if they want my help. But I really love supporting the mom & pop shops.
Whoever books a call for Food Photography after they read this blog will get 20-25 Food/product photos for $125.
Meet Dr. Kate Gress!
I am a doctor of chiropractic and have owned my own business for the past 23 years. At one point I almost quit and was about to sell my practice. Not because I didn’t love chiropractic, but because the model of being a service provider, a business owner, and a mom was completely flawed! I was missing out on my kids’ lives, activities, and special events because I was tied to my business. I decided to do something about it and change the model to allow more time freedom without sacrificing finances. I saw that I was up for a challenge because I didn’t see any females doing this model, but by having had two practices and one which I wasn’t in and didn’t see patients, I knew it could be done. I saw that the business didn’t implode while I wasn’t there and that it actually could be successful! So I put my business hat on and nailed down the steps for this new model. Hence, I love teaching other female business owners how to create this model so they can have more freedom and more finances.

The Soul Fire Entrepreneur | The Nest Co-Work + Club
Being an entrepreneur can be a lonely road because you don’t often have co-workers to share the burden with and that’s precisely why Alex, along with Kaela and new partner Lauren have set out to do.
Whew! We made it another trip around the sun. I don’t know about you but 2021 felt like a big year for self-growth after seeing what 2020 drudged to the surface with C0V!D. My business went through a re-model and trimming away of what was no longer serving me anymore and landed me into a position of serving my community in two very necessary ways, “business + pleasure.”
Last year I met with several business owners and built up a queue of their stories and created content for them to help share their passion and mission. It was my way of supporting and nurturing my fellow entrepreneurs especially after such a trying year. I put the project on hold while I sorted out my own direction, and now that I am finally clear about what I desire, it was time to revisit this project and make a few modifications and revisions to the content structure.
I have renamed this blog series to be “The Soul Fire Entrepreneur” because I am really interested in spending time and sharing space with entrepreneurs who are in business and doing passion work that is so hot and fierce that it sets a fire to their souls. This can be for both men and women and for people outside of our Green Bay, WI community. My intention for this blog series is to be a vessel of expansion, community and connection. Get ready to grab your surf board because you are about to meet some amazing souls who are creating tidal waves this year! Are there any misconceptions about your field/product/area of expertise? If so how do you educate people about them?
Coworking is a newer concept being brought to the midwest. It is very popular in other regions and our founders (Alex) wanted to bring this to Wisconsin and create a community of mighty women, that are female-forward and encouraging of entrepreneurship.
We execute people with our events and showing off the space. We also use social media to give a sneak peek into the space.
Tell me a favorite client story.
We've had clients join the communtiy just for the community part of the membership. To make friendships and find like-minded women who are in similar boats, to help support each other through their trials of entrepreneurship.
We've also had women join because they needed that "other" space because sharing an office with their hubby was not possible because he was loud when talking on the phone. lol
Who are you looking to attract/serve more?
We are looking to attract any female business owner, who needs a community to have in their back pocket. Who may need a secondary location for working purposes to get her shit done.
We are big into the entrepreneurial world, and very supportive of anyone with entrepreneurial dreams.
For the person who wants to start small - what would you offer them?
We offer 3-month/6-month/12-month memberships.
Starting off with the 3-month membership will allow them to get their feet wet. The 12-month is obviously the better bargain, but starting small they can get a feel for how they will use it, and what they can get out of it.
For the person who wants to go all in - what would you recommend?
We recommend the 12-month paid in full membership because it truly is the best deal! When you pay in full, you actually are paying only for 10 months with 2 months free! Plus you pay once and then you are done!
The 12-month paid in full is $1000.
Plus every member has the opportunity to refer members, and if someone signs up that they referred, they can earn a FREE month of membership!
What led you to start your business?
Alex had seen a need for a coworking space in Green Bay, that not only brought community but helped women in business build strong powerful relationships.
What unique life experiences do you bring to your business?
Alex not only owns The Nest but she also started her own Digital Boutique Agency, building websites for amazing businesses all over the country,
So she is a true entrepreneur! When going to school in Minnesota, she was able to try coworking spaces, and the idea to bring this culture back to Green Bay was born.
She and a previous co-founder created the ideas, and with the help of the other co-founders, Kaela Gedda, and Sonny Hennesy The Nest was born.
How parents can shape sexuality | The Broken & Beloved Project
For a long time, I believed that sexuality meant being sexual with someone. I was never taught that pleasure and desire were good and normal to experience, and you didn’t need to give that much of yourself in order to be loved.
TW this blog discusses SA read with caution.
I was raised mostly with my mother. My mother was physically always there since she was disabled, yet she was emotionally checked out. Her childhood was nothing short of a nightmare leaving her shattered. Getting mental healthcare back then wasn’t as easy and due to some of her trauma, seeking help was terrifying in itself. Due to the type of abuse she suffered at the hands of men who were supposed to provide and protect her, she shut down and I don’t blame her.
She had a strong and deep-seated fear for men and never hesitated to make her fear known. Her view of men was very barbaric and still is if I am being completely transparent. (Love you, mom) When I was younger I asked her if she would ever date again, and or re-marry her response was always, “not while my kids are living in my house.” It would take me years before I understood why she was the way she was. Because of her fear of men, I never felt comfortable talking to her unless I absolutely had to about my body, and I always tried to hide my boyfriends from her as best as I could. I became very secretive and very promiscuous at the age of only nine or ten years old. Boy’s treated me differently and paid a lot of attention to me and my craving for that attention was almost insatiable for as long as I can remember.
Where was my dad? Well, my biological father was always in arms reach, I just never knew it. Unfortunately, I wouldn’t find out who my biological father was until 2019 thanks to Ancestry DNA. The father my mother told me about I only met twice. I met him when I was around five years old and then again at twelve. During my visit when I was twelve, my brother and I drove out to the chicken farm he worked on to visit him. As he and my brother talked, I raced down the aisles of chickens snapping pictures of them with my disposable camera. After a few minutes of us being there, a delivery had arrived and my brother had to move the vehicle so they could get in. As soon as he walked out of the door, my “dad” started speaking to me. I was immediately uncomfortable because he had never spoken a word to me. And now he was talking and walking towards me telling me that my mom and I should come and live with him. Before I knew it he had me backed into a wall and started to touch my body. I still had the disposable camera in my hand and began to charge up the flash as he continued to touch and as soon as the singing of my flash charge stopped, I whipped it in front of me and took a picture of him only inches from my face. The flash blinded him for a moment, which was all the time I needed to get to the door. As I made my way to the door, my brother came back in and I left and sat in the car to wait for him to finish visiting. As we drove back to my aunt’s house where we were staying, I shut down and didn’t really say much the rest of our visit. I knew that if I told my mom that she might do something awful to him and since this was only the second time I met him, I didn’t want to cause a scene.
I eventually told my mom what happened upon our return, however, after that, I never really felt like I owned my body or as though it was important to protect. I mean, my own father sure didn’t care to protect it. My body became my tool and opportunity to provide me with some type of connection and giving it away to men made me feel special and important until it didn’t. Either my partners would get what they wanted from me and would leave. Or I would find out well too late that my partner didn’t actually like who I was as a person and eventually they would leave, or I would after finding someone else that would give me the dopamine kick of attention.
What I have come to realize is that I never had the chance to learn that my sexuality belonged to me and did not require anyone else to have it. For a long time, I believed that sexuality meant being sexual with someone. I was never taught that pleasure and desire were good and normal to experience, and you didn’t need to give that much of yourself in order to be loved. I was taught that those desires would get me in trouble and get me hurt. I was taught that my body was free for the taking and didn’t require permission or respect. Slowly but surely, I started to embody that my sexuality was all I could offer and was all I was good for. It was one of the only ways I could captivate the attention of man and get a temporary quench to my thirst to be desired, wanted, and sought after.
During my childhood, my relationship with my sexuality was a confusing taboo subject. I found myself feeling ashamed and guilty for feeling or wanting attention. I had such a deep void of true attachment that anytime I did receive attention from men that weren’t sexual, I always felt pressure to give them my body so they would want to stay or so they would stay longer. I never believed that I was good enough without my body. And then after I became a Christian and a wife I learned that my body was now an obligation regardless of whether I wanted it to be or not because that’s what the Bible says, or does it?
If my childhood sounds anything like yours, I want you t know first that you are not alone. Secondly, I want you to know that you are not alone and that your sexuality, pleasure, and desires are not bad or shameful. That they are a gift and not to be given to anyone without your 100% yes. I want you to understand that you are valuable and worthy of love without the sacrifice of your body. If you are struggling with intimacy because you feel some sense of shame or that your body isn’t desirable, or you are being sexually intimate with a partner because you are afraid to hurt their feelings or you are being mean by saying no, please know that while this state of being is very familiar, it isn’t healthy for you to continue to live in this state. I am creating an intimate community with 33 women who want to reconnect with their bodies and restore their sexuality back to its rightful owner which is you. The Broken and Beloved Project was specifically designed to guide women in need of healing through a boudoir portrait experience and self-love coaching and I would love to have you join us. Your healing and reconnection will influence every relationship around you from your partner, your kids, your community and, your workplace. I declare that 2024 is the year you stop putting yourself on the back burner and care for yourself with as much attention and vigor as you do for your family, your friends, and your job. It’s time you start truly loving yourself beyond the hot bubble bath.
Science proves that our boudoir experience is an effective tool for healing | The Broken and Beloved Project
We can rewire our brains using tools like visualization, meditation, positive thoughts, experiences, and prayers to trigger and activate different genes in our bodies.
Over and over I would hear the same message, “this was so much more than a photo shoot, this was healing.” “This photoshoot did more for me than all the years I have spent in talk therapy” Even the women inquiring were doing so with “I want to feel good in my skin” “I want to love my body, but I can't, maybe you can help.” On very rare occasions would women inquire with “I want to celebrate.” Almost all of the women reaching out were looking to heal themselves. I recognized the pattern but was unable to explain how and why it worked until I read a book called, “It didn’t start with you'' by Mark Wolynn.
In his book he states, “Plastic change, caused by our experience,” says Doidge, “travels deep into the brain, and even into our genes, molding them as well.8 In his best-selling book “The Genie in Your Genes,” which reviews the research linking emotions and gene expression, Dr. Dawson Church describes how visualization, meditation, and focusing on positive thoughts, emotions, and prayers—what he calls internal epigenetic interventions—can activate genes and positively affect our health. “Filling our minds with positive images of wellbeing,” he says, “can produce an epigenetic environment that reinforces the healing process.”9 Wolynn, Mark. It Didn't Start with You (p. 51). Furthermore, he stated, “A life completely devoid of trauma, as we’re learning, is highly unlikely. Traumas do not sleep, even with death, but, rather, continue to look for the fertile ground of resolution in the children of the following generations. Fortunately, human beings are resilient and are capable of healing most types of trauma. This can happen at any time during our lives. We just need the right insights and tools.”
Wolynn, Mark. It Didn't Start with You (p. 52).
Let me use the only official degree I carry, one in applied science, to break down what all of that means for you. Essentially, we have the power to change our story. We can rewire our brains using tools like visualization, meditation, positive thoughts, experiences, and prayers to trigger and activate different genes in our bodies. Wolynn also states that trauma left unheard will continue to be expressed and passed down in the bloodline until someone takes the initiative to deal with and heal it.
He went on to share a study involving the offspring of stressed male mice conducted at Emory University School of Medicine in 2013,The research team would take these mice and administer an electrical shock each time they introduced them to the smell of cherry blossom. They then mated the mice and tested the offspring. This time they would only introduce the smell of cherry blossom and despite not being inflicted with the pain, the offspring still had a strong reaction. They then mated the offspring to produce grand pups and even in the next generation, they found that the cherry blossom smell still gave a negative reaction! Next the researchers began to work with these grand pups. They began introducing a positive experience along with the smell of cherry blossom. Over time, the negative reaction in the mice had stopped. Furthermore when they mated them again for the great grand pups or 4th generation and introduced them to the smell of cherry blossom they experienced no negative reaction at all.
After reading that study, everything clicked for me. I realized that this is precisely why my clients feel like they are healing. When it comes to connecting to our body, we all fight the demon I like to call the mirror. That one perspective prick that only lets you see one angle of yourself on repeat every day for most of your life and deceives you into thinking this is the only way you look to others around you. And if that wasn't enough, many of us are walking around with inherited and direct trauma markers of which we are completely unaware that make us feel broken. When in actuality we desire to be heard without fear of retaliation or abandonment.
Healing takes time, and most importantly it takes practice. In full transparency, I can’t run a portrait studio or business model separate from my healing journey. And my work is simply an extension of my life experience and self-healing. With each client journey I experience, I find a little more healing for myself. I found that the trauma, pain, and discomfort I experienced in my life brought me to this place. Like it or not, there is no separation between my identity and my impact on the people around me. My identity and existence are my impacts.
My calling to marry self-healing with and through intimate portrait experiences waited long enough. In 2021 it was time to finally give birth to this glorious mission, The Broken + Beloved Project. Where I get the opportunity to work intimately with 33 women on reclaiming their body and existence as their own again. This project is not for the faint of heart. It’s for women who are ready to make significant shifts and to deal with their limiting beliefs. It will push you, it will shake you and it will completely unravel you back into the person you have always been and may have lost sight of. If you have lost yourself, let this project be your map home.

My “Stranger Things” experience | The Broken + Beloved Project
Many clients will thank me for their healing, and while I am grateful for their appreciation, they must understand that they did all of the heavy lifting. They were the ones that made an effort to show up for themselves. I can provide a safe and nurturing experience for my clients, but ultimately, they have to want this for themselves consciously. So many obstacles stand in their way, from finances to a lack of support, shame, guilt, and little to no self-worth. Saying yes to ourselves and accepting responsibility to care for ourselves the same as we care for our loved ones is a radical decision, and it takes so much courage and strength.
I want to tell you that this blog may evoke some triggers in readers who have experienced assault or abuse. Please read with caution.
Have you ever watched Stranger Things? There was a part in the second series where the main character, Will, kept having these nightmares where he was running away from this dark and very frightening black force they called "The Mind Flayer." As Will explained this terror to his mother's boyfriend Bob, Bob gave him solid advice. He said, "confront the monster, and he will go away." However, (spoiler alert) that is not what the Mind Flayer did. Instead, the Mind Flayer penetrated Will's body like a virus. It took control of him. Later in the story, Will's mother Joyce discovered that heat caused extreme discomfort and pain in the Mind Flayer. Eventually, they heated Will hot enough that the Mind Flayer darted out of his body like a bat out of hell. Will was finally himself again.
Those two powerful scenes in the second series of Stranger Things are the closest description I have to how Shania's photoshoot felt. Shania deeply desired to use her portrait experience to tell her story, but someone would come to protect her this time. She wanted to dip into her broken past so the images could speak and rewrite her story. She, like Will, wanted to face her monster head-on. My stylist and I overdid her makeup. We wrote words that she was called and left handprints on the places of her body that people touched without consent.
Before we could progress to the protection, Shania needed a healthy space to release her anger. I told her to let it all out that I could take it. Shania sat there for a moment holding herself in a pause. All at once, she released the most ear-piercing scream I had ever heard. A cry as intense as that of Will painfully removing from his body the Mind Flayer. As terrifying as it was, it was a relief knowing it was no longer inside this young, beautiful woman. Once she released this scream, her energy changed. The typical anxious and overwhelmed Shania was calm. My intuition told me whatever she was holding on to was now gone. She was ready, and it was time to move her into her true self.
I grabbed a bucket of warm water and a washcloth and washed away everything. I wiped away the extra makeup, the depreciating words, and the handprints we made on Shania's body. I embraced her for a moment and reinforced that she was safe now. We changed her outfit from black and dark to white and bright. I wanted to let her do what was innate to her, and we gave her space to dance. Shania quickly lit up the room with her movement and laughter, and we all felt the relief she was now experiencing.
Shania took a pivot on her path after her photoshoot. She continued to be curious about healing and began digging into even more support resources to help her through her journey. Today, Shania is using her broken past to paint a brighter future for kids in our community as a foster mother. I couldn't be more excited for her in this season of life.

Portraits have the power to foster self-healing | The Broken & Beloved Project
“I lost my smile, and I heard you were the one that helped them come back.” I sat there with a melted heart, tears in my eyes, and a lump in my throat as I read that email. I was delighted to know that word was getting out there that if women wanted to be seen and understood, it was me who they should come to.
“I lost my smile, and I heard you were the one that helped them come back.” I sat there with a melted heart, tears in my eyes, and a lump in my throat as I read that email. I was delighted to know that word was getting out there that if women wanted to be seen and understood, it was me who they should come to.
When Shania came into the studio for consultation over three years ago, I found out she had lost a job she loved and instead of continuing my pitch to book a photoshoot for her, I offered her the opportunity to be my assistant. I had been looking for an assistant and based on the long conversation we had, I knew that she had the people skills needed for the job based on her energy and boldness to show up for herself, despite being at her lowest of lows.
Shania fit right in and was learning quickly. She was great with all the family and branding sessions, but when it came to her first boudoir session, she froze. I could sense her fear and how uncomfortable she was. She pushed through, but when we went to lunch that day I asked her more about her intense response. She opened up to me about her past and how traumatic it was for her, especially for her sexuality and how she viewed it in general. Her knee-jerk reaction to being present at the boudoir shoot was fear and anxiety. After hearing her story, I immediately relieved her of having to assist me for those sessions, but she said, “No, I want to do a shoot like that someday. I think it will help me heal what was broken and taken from me.” I looked at her with complete understanding and comfort because I too had a story, and she had no idea that photography was one of the biggest tools I used on my self-healing journey and I too had yet to make that connection.
Up Next: Hear about how Shania’s Shoot helped change the course of her life.
We are looking for 22 more women who are looking to experience a boudoir session in the fall of 2023 AND a transformation in their life for our Broken + Beloved Project. Will you be one of our 22?
Meet Rachael | Owner of RP Photography | 920 Women in Business
Meet Rachael the owner of RP photography!
Welcome to episode four of our blog series 920 Women in biz where we spotlight women entrepreneurs in the 920! Today’s guest on the blog is Rachael the owner of RP Photography. I had the extended pleasure of getting to observe a fellow photographer working her magic in a genre that no longer fits me… NEWBORNS
First and foremost Rachael’s studio is the absolute cutest. I would be lying if I didn’t say regret washed over me for not taking my last baby in for portraits like this. I was a photographer, so I insisted on doing it myself, and let’s just say…. it wasn’t my best work. All the props, wraps, and patience it takes to execute a shoot like this is beyond my capacity which is why I am thrilled to give you an outstanding referral to Rachael if you're in the market for someone who is a full-service portrait photographer like me.
Rachael and I both understand that photography is a luxury and all of the hard work, training, certifications, and everything are what this job look so “easy.” Rachael designs walls, albums and more so you don’t have to! I can speak from personal experience that even I, a PHOTOGRAPHER fails to print images unless someone forces me to or does it for me.
Which reminds me, I STILL have yet to print or even share any of our vacation pictures from MARCH ya’ll. So let me be the testimony and say, PAY someone to do it for you.
Rachael also provides the full treatment with a hair and makeup artist, beer for dad, wine for mom, and a comfy cozy place to relax while she works. her studio is set up for efficiency and it’s amazing what she can produce in a small but beautifully designed space. She has all the props, all the outfits so all parents have to do is show up!
If you are wondering what this experience looks and feels like, be sure to head to her Facebook page and check out the behind-the-scenes video she hired us to create for her business and see for yourself!
Meet Lindsay + Travis | Owner of Elysian Salon Suites | 920 Women in Business
Meet Lindsay + Travis the owners of Elysian Salon Suites!
Welcome to episode three of our blog series 920 Women in biz where we spotlight women entrepreneurs in the 920! Today’s guest on the blog is Lindsay and her husband Travis, the new owners of Elysian Salon Suites right down the road from our studio! They are currently under construction as they place the final touches on their build out and their tenants are moving in. Therefore, I invited them into the studio for some fun headshots! Now on to the good stuff!
WHO DOES YOUR BUSINESS SERVE?
Beauty professionals and the surrounding Green Bay Area residents.
WHAT IS YOUR BUSINESS MOTTO?
Set yourself free.
WHAT IS/ARE A COMMON QUESTION/S PEOPLE ASK WHEN THEY ARE LOOKING TO WORK WITH/BOOK YOU - OR ABOUT YOUR SERVICES?
That is a loaded question. Since I do hair and makeup AND will be running an entire salon of other beauty professionals, the questions are very different from each. But most of the time they want to know how confident I am in what I do. I just try to inspire and be real and authentic in who I am. I love helping my clients/beauty professionals and making them feel taken care of and supported. I don’t want either to stay stagnant or feel bored as neither do I!
ARE THERE ANY MISCONCEPTIONS ABOUT YOUR FIELD/PRODUCT/AREA OF EXPERTISE?
“ What do you love most about your job?” Most people don’t realize how hard beauty professionals work. If I didn’t love EVERYTHING about my job, I can tell you I would not be where I am today. There is no going home after doing hair. Or for the salon, there will be little sitting around. I put effort in my business and my reputation. I am mindful of every move I make. There are constantly things that need to be done to grow and be in the know at all times. I like to make sure clients and tenants know I am constantly growing to be the best I can be for them.
TELL ME A FAVORITE CLIENT STOR…
I have a client who comes in and every time tells me I am the best. She is always so grateful and let’s me know what a great job I do every time. I think that as adults we forget to remind people how great they are and how much they mean to us. That alone is the best gift you can give your hairstylist.
WHO ARE YOU LOOKING TO ATTRACT/SERVE MORE?
Currently our focus is to attract beauty professionals who want to grow their own brand. We have independent suites set up for people who want their own space to come and go as they please. But we also want to help them grow. We are always there with resources and advice. We are also always their to help promote them as much as we can.
FOR THE PERSON WHO WANTS TO START SMALL - WHAT WOULD YOU OFFER THEM?
We have individual and double suites that can be utilized and shared with another professional if they choose. We understand with change in location and maybe the fear of the unknown, we want to have options for people. We also have all of the equipment they need to get started so they will not need to start their business with a huge overhead. We have all of the resources necessary to get started and will help promote them as much as they need.
FOR THE PERSON WHO WANTS TO GO ALL IN - WHAT WOULD YOU RECCOMMEND?
Our suites are very simple yet high quality and modern. Each suite is easily individualized so you can personalize your space and make it your own. Each professional has their own sign with their business logo and will have a spot on our website with a link to their own business page along with a branding photo that they would provide to us.
WHAT LED YOU TO START YOUR BUSINESS?
We had been wanting to open a salon for a while, we had no idea what that would look like but with all of our experiences and different salon designs we were involved in, we decided we wanted to bring the downtown Green Bay Area a fresh and modern spot for growing entrepreneurs.
WHAT UNIQUE LIFE EXPERIENCES DO YOU BRING TO YOUR BUSINESS?
We as a couple and as individuals have experienced many adversities. We have also seen it all in the salon world. There is nothing you can throw at us and we cannot overcome. We would like to think with those experiences we can mentor and encourage individuals feeling doubt or worry about creating a future for themselves.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE YOUR YOUNGER SELF?
Live fearlessly and with no regret.
WHAT ADVICE WOULD YOU GIVE ANOTHER BUSINESS OWNER?
Take risks and never sell yourself short. Surround yourself with motivated individuals.
Meet Danielle | Owner of Della Jewelry | 920 Women in Business
Meet Danielle, the owner of Della Jewlery!
If there was a podcast, this would be episode two in our 920 Women in Business series! A few weeks back I took a trip over to Danielle’s home studio to check out all she does behind-the-scenes in her jewelry business. I absolutely love the simply, yet elegant pieces she creates. It was a joy to watch her passionately work and chat about what it’s like to be a business owner and a mom.
Who does your business serve?
At DELLA Jewelry, we serve all women but mainly aim to serve the “real life” ladies, as we say, because that’s how we view ourselves! We have piles of laundry, and less than perfect Instagram feeds and can’t always afford the new clothes or jewelry. So, we aim to be as affordable as possible while handcrafting our pieces to be stylish AND fit your everyday, practical life.
What is your business motto?
We want to help women feel as beautiful as they indeed are! We want every woman to feel confident in who she UNIQUELY is because she has her beauty that no one else has and if we can create something to accentuate that, help her feel that, then we are happy campers!
What is/are a common question/s people ask when they are looking to work with/book you - or about your services?
The most common question we get is about the materials we use and if our pieces are nickel-free...which they are! I (Danielle) have incredibly sensitive skin, so creating pieces that wouldn’t irritate my skin (or anyone else’s) was essential to us.
Are there any misconceptions about your field/product/area of expertise? If so how do you educate people about them?
The biggest misconception we face is surrounding our polymer clay jewelry. Many people hear the word “clay” and think “heavy.” And that’s not the case! All of our jewelry is lightweight, and our clay pieces are the lightest! We spend a lot of time sharing about this and proper jewelry care on our social media.
Tell me a favorite client story.
A customer recently contacted me to create something unique for a mom who had lost several babies. She commissioned a piece that represented each of these mom’s children, and after receiving it, the mom reached out to us to share a bit more of her story and just how special the necklace was to her. She cried when she received it, and we cried when we learned that we got to make something so special for her!
Who are you looking to attract/serve more?
Anyone who is looking to build their jewelry collection! Whether it be boutiques looking to carry a local, handmade line in their store or a new mom looking for something to represent her baby. We’re here for it all!
For the person who wants to start small - what would you offer them?
If you don’t want to build a “collection” or aren’t the person who wants to “match their earrings to their outfit,” I’d recommend starting small with one particular piece that can “go with everything.” Our initial necklaces are a great place to start.
For the person who wants to go all in - what would you reccommend?
Become a DELLA Jewelry Brand Rep 😉 We have a brand rep program where you can earn free jewelry and get the “first look” of anything we put out, and this is great if you’re really into jewelry and would like several pieces!
What led you to start your business?
I’ve always loved jewelry and working with my hands. As a little girl, I had vast cases of beads and remembered making a beaded watch for my mom’s birthday one year! Once I graduated college and found myself with a little extra time on my hands and a heaping amount of student debt, I found my way back to beading. But I thought it was only going to be for Christmas gifts! It wasn’t until a local business saw some of our pieces and asked us to be part of a show they were hosting that I thought, “oh, this could be a thing!” And it was the connection with people as they shopped and other vendors that I loved so much that pushed us to make it “a thing” and keep going! And now, it’s what allows me to stay home with my daughter. Something that was once just a dream!
What unique life experiences do you bring to your business?
Oh my. So much. But I think currently we’ve been leaning into two things. First, our “MAMA” line and specifically our rainbow MAMA pieces because of my miscarriage and it’s connected us to so many moms who have felt the same pain and allowed them to not only share their story but honor their babe(s) and carry them with them every day. Second, my daughter was born with Down syndrome, so we have a “Lucky Few” line for moms of babies with Ds, and the proceeds go to our local Down syndrome association. This one, too, has brought so many moms and their stories across my workbench, and I’m forever grateful. Every time I get an order for either one of these pieces, I cry because it’s so personal.
What advice would you give your younger self?
You don’t have to be everything for everyone! Figure out who you are and what you want to do, and it’s okay that you do “only” that. I spread myself too thin for a long time, trying to fill every request out there rather than figuring out and doing just what I’m good at.
What advice would you give another business owner?
What you’re doing is unique and wonderful and different from other business owners, so don’t worry about “the competition” and connect with other business owners! The friendships and connections we’ve made with other business owners (yes, even other jewelry makers) are some of the very best and most rewarding. It’s like a super fun club where we all watch out for each other and help each other grow! ☺️

Are you a woman in business here in the 920 area? Do you love to show up for your clients on social media? Let’s chat!

Welcome to our brand new blog series; we call 920 Women in Business. We go on location to meet with women creating their own empires here in the Northeast Wisconsin area. These are women are some of the most talented and gifted people we have met, and they live right here in our community. TIFFANY
When I sat down with Tiffany, she had just moved into her brand new office on 3852 Creamery Rd in De Pere, WI. Her space was warm, with a beautiful window above her desk allowing just enough natural light to make it welcoming but not too overwhelming. We chatted a lot about how we felt about the healing gifts of touch that have been lost in our modern-day culture. And how women like Tiffany are striving to bring it back as an alternate and or a coinciding therapy to modern medicine.
Who does your business serve?
I serve individuals looking for healing from trauma, anxiety, illness, and pain emotionally and physically.
What is your business motto?
"If you don't make time for your wellness, you will be forced to take care of your illness." -unknown.
What is/are ordinary question/s people ask when they are looking to work with/book you - or about your services?
I'm often asked if I accept insurance, and unfortunately, no, insurance doesn't take me.
Are there any misconceptions about your field/product/area of expertise? If so, how do you educate people about them?
That people who do Reiki and energy work aren't believers in God, and they are calling in something other than God. When in fact, Reiki is taking back ownership of the true healer, which is God.
I also get confused that I am a counselor or therapist. I'm actually a coach and work alongside my client's healthcare team.
Who are you looking to attract/serve more?
I want to serve women struggling with relationships, physical ailments, and an alternative approach to primary stream medicine.
For the person who wants to start small - what would you offer them?
I would offer flower therapy that is a natural supplement that helps support their emotions.
For the person who wants to go all-in - what would you recommend?
I would recommend a supplement regiment, therapeutic touch in conjunction with a 6-week intensive emotional coaching program.
What led you to start your business? (what need did you see, the passion you developed, etc.)
My personal health journey both physically and mentally.
What unique life experiences do you bring to your business?
I am a cancer survivor, a family mental illness, 17+ years of relationship building and service to my community.
What advice would you give your younger self?
Don't give a shit what people think.
What advice would you give another business owner?
Do it, afraid.
Share with us a client’s testimony that was moving to you.
Dani, who is a mother of 4, came into my office in desperation. She mentioned she just couldn't find the right person to help her through life's challenges. After 8 weeks of intensive emotional coaching and Reiki, this is what Dani had to say. "The amount of growth I have achieved and will continue to achieve with Tiffany has been, quite literally, infinite. She is absolutely amazing at what she feels out with you and doesn't try to "band-aid" it. Healing you is her goal, and as long as that is what you are truly ready for, she will make it happen for you."
5 Tips for Planning your Family Photo Shoot
The time has arrived, 2020 is almost behind us! What has stood out to me during this year has for sure been the importance of relationships and how near and dear they truly are to us. Our family relationships are an oxymoron at best. They can be the thing that puts pressure on us and also the restoration to lift us up. Either way, they have been under a lot of pressure and we should celebrate our perseverance.
I don’t know about you but I am planning on putting up my Christmas tree next weekend, whipping out the holiday decor and blasting the music for as long as possible. I am truly looking forward to having unplugged, intentional time with my loved ones and perhaps even creating some new traditions and creating so many memories my heart explodes.
If you are one of the lucky ducks that is on our email list, then you my friend have already received this video I created about some tips to consider when its time to book that photo shoot. Even if you have already been a go getter and have booked and completed your annual family photo, my challenge to you for 2021 is to try using some of these tips next year to help lighten the load.
Are you more of a reader, here is a quick list of the main tips…
Set your intentions - Know what you want to do with your photos when the photo session is complete.
Find and hire a photographer that FITS your intentions + establish a budget.
What are you going to where? MOM NEEDS TO PICK HER OUTFIT FIRST!
Expectations - make sure they are within reason
Choose joy and enjoy the moment. Worry and stress is reflected in your body language and face.
Will I ever like myself in photos?
Reflections on body positivity and how being a videographer at Mary Breuer Photos has shaped my own body positive journey,
Hey! It’s Prisca!
As I prepared to write my first blog post for Mary Breuer Photos it came to mind that I should share a recent post from my personal insta. So I’ve copied it below.
BUT, before you read it I want to add something. Something that’s not shared in it but I want to share with you. If you’ve been in for a shoot since June 2019 you’ve probably met me. If not I hope to meet you soon.
I’m a bit of a lurker. A camera that comes in during hair and makeup and follows you to your photoshoot. It’s the nature of my job as I capture behind the scenes. As Mary coaches you through you photoshoot - it’s a workout, especially if you’re doing boudoir - your connection and focus with Mary builds.
I hope I disappear. I hope you don’t notice me at all. I slide up and then back away but you focus on Mary.
I see a whole world that you don’t see. You see yourself most often through the mirror. Mary sees you through a photography lens. I see you through video.
That means I see motion. I’m watching you as a whole person. Waiting for a perfect sequence of movement either naturally or quite often as Mary helps you pose.
And I’m not judging. I’m finding out who you are as a person and when I go to edit I’m trimming to the most memorable part of your essence.
And I hope it makes you cry tears of happiness. I hope it makes you love yourself. I hope you see the beauty others see. That I see. I hope if it’s a family shoot you hug your family a little tighter knowing what treasure you posses.
So you could say because of the nature of my work it’s a little easier for me to love myself. You see I have so much love and compassion and admiration for each person who bravely steps outside of their comfort zone with Mary. I’ve had a crash course in exposure to self love through my work and many of you have been an inspirational part of that.
Today, if you’re feeling yourself, letting go of self hatred like I was in my insta post, or crying over your body it’s okay. We’re on a journey and when you are a part of the MBP experience know that we are welcoming you and loving you body and soul.
~ Prisca
Have you ever looked at a sequence of photos someone took with their cellphone and not hated yourself in at least one - if not multiple - perhaps even all of them?
Well today I downloaded some photos a friend sent me of a small backyard party I had this year. I’m going to cherish the moments she captured of my friends and family forever.
But dang she took a lot of me! Once upon a time I would have cringed through each photo. I would have hated my body. I would have grit my teeth that while I was feeling great that day I clearly looked ugly and others saw the ugly full body of me.
I assure you I’d been doing this self hatred routine towards myself via photos since about 10 years old.
But today it never happened. Every single photo I loved myself, I didn’t judge myself or my face expression or my arms or belly. I saw a happy connected me living my best life with loved ones. And I loved her.
It’s a mental game against self hatred ladies and gents. Because I didn’t look model worthy in the photos, I just loved myself while looking at them.
I want to share how I may have got to this point.
1. Be in more photos. Allow your friends to take them of you and release your desire to control how you look in every one. It normalizes seeing myself the same way seeing yourself in a mirror does. And over years you appreciate photos you use to hate. You realize you’re glad you took a photo. Speak kind words to your photo you. Like a friend.
2. Follow body positive plus sized women on social media. It will change your brain to see their happiness and self love. I swear.
3. Catch yourself. That inner mean girl? As soon as she talks call her on it. As if she was bad mouthing a good friend in front of you. And then speak love to your friend (yourself).
And maybe today it helps that I’ve been fighting a cold. My lungs are so important to me. While I’m feeling sick it’s lovely to remember the good feeling of earlier this summer.
For whatever reason this is an amazing feeling of being perfectly happy in your body even seeing it in photos. I wish the same for you ❤️
Is your shell broken?
Is your shell broken?
An open heart note to my friends who struggle with looking at themselves in the mirror…
When I took this photo I wanted to showcase my confidence and insecurity. I wanted to share the story of how my body is beautiful and still so, I struggle with the way it looks. My stomach is one of my biggest insecurities and I wanted to share what I feel in the inside, on the outside because sometimes it’s hard to express deep rooted pain into words.
My body and the size of it has always been a source of pain for me. It started when I was a child. Food was an outlet for me. It was a way for me to suppress my emotions as I wasn’t really able to express them. Food in many ways has been my best friend and confidant. I have been trapped in this vicious cycle for a very long time, and photography is a therapy tool I use to continuous ground myself and shift my perspective.
I have concluded that the mirror is only one perspective. It’s the perspective we see daily and its a very limited perspective, simply because we are physically incapable of seeing ourselves from any other point of view. (our eyes not able to move to a different location haha). I also discovered that many photos we see are perception shifts and that by manipulating shapes, we can also shift what we see. Yes, we can shape shift!
I studied until my eyes would become blood shot from watching class after class on posing, connection, body language, body shapes etc. because I understood that I had the power to exist in a photograph and NOT hate and dissociate from what I saw. And if I could have photos of myself and not hate them, I could teach others how to as well!
Knowing how to shape shift has helped me to stop missing out on experiences and opportunities, it’s given me the power and encouragement to know that my point of view is very limited and that so many others see different angles and sides of me, and I like those perspectives now that I have given myself the opportunity to experience them. I have learned that I don’t have to “wait” until my shell is a certain size to enjoy life, I can enjoy and appreciate my shell right now, and if there is something that bothers me, I have the power to change how I relate to it. Read that again.
I want to invite you to an opportunity to see yourself differently too. I want to share my shape shifting knowledge with you, but I will warn you… You may fall in madly in love with this side of yourself and get addicted to seeing the beauty in yourself. Many of my clients do which is what keeps them coming back for their bi-yearly “therapy session.”

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THIS CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC ARE YOU EXPERIENCING NOW?
It's a daily battle to not let the little things bother me. It's new to work from home, with all 3 kids at home, and my hubby laid off. It's just a lot to figure out 'on the spot'. Everything is changing daily, so it really is just one day at a time.
WHAT IS THE MOST POSITIVE THING YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED DURING THIS TIME?
It's funny because it's the same as what is challenging. Being home, together, is such a blessing, All the little moments that would otherwise be forgotten. Reading books with the kids, sleeping in, playing barbies, dancing in the living room, late movie nights, no rushed mornings. Everything has slowed down and it really is lovely.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN/FAMILY TO MOST REMEMBER ABOUT DURING THIS TIME?
How much we love. Each other, our family, our friends, and everyone, really. If we have tears, it's because our heart aches for people who are hurting. Not because we're scared. We trust that God has a plan, we're all learning from this, and that He will provide anything we need. Thankful that God is in control.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THIS CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC ARE YOU EXPERIENCING NOW?
The most challenging part is knowing there are so many people who are helpless, families not able to see each other, missing friends, and not being sure when this situation will be over.
WHAT IS THE MOST POSITIVE THING YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED DURING THIS TIME?
The most positive thing is spending more time with family when life is usually very busy.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN/FAMILY TO MOST REMEMBER ABOUT DURING THIS TIME?
Even when there is a crisis going on we must stay positive. I love seeing people singing from their balconies in Italy, people donating items for kids without meals, people trying to help people. There is some beauty in this crisis after all.

WHAT IS THE MOST POSITIVE THING YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED DURING THIS TIME?
To slow down and live a simpler life. I am loving being able to spend an endless amount of time with my son and enjoy his laughter and sense of humor.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN/FAMILY TO MOST REMEMBER ABOUT DURING THIS TIME?
The time he has me all to himself for an extended amount of time, playing games together, going for bike rides, having movie nights at home and laughing together.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THIS CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC ARE YOU EXPERIENCING NOW?
My husband and I are both working remotely, and I can feel the tension of wanting to be present and available to my daughters as they navigate alternative schooling while also wanting to fulfill work expectations. My youngest just turned six. For her, it was tough to come to terms with not getting to bring in treats to share with classmates and not having a birthday party. My nine-year-old is loving this time at home, but she is not accustomed to having homework; she expects work to be done at school, and time at home to be spent in leisure. She is bright and capable, but it was a struggle at first to motivate her to keep up with the few tasks being asked of her, when she just wanted to be in control of what she did each day. We are all introverts, so being home more isn't too difficult, but there's a sense that we never get a break from each other, while we also miss the routines of seeing friends, going to church, playing at a park, or eating in a restaurant. We have to monitor our feelings and reactions and be comfortable articulating our needs if we would benefit from a nap or some time alone (and when fuses are short, we're all getting practice in extending grace and forgiveness).
WHAT IS THE MOST POSITIVE THING YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED DURING THIS TIME?
Our girls are in kindergarten and fourth grade, and while they've generally been close, this last month has allowed them to rely on each other even more, in ways that will serve them well long term. When they are diligent, they can complete their schoolwork before lunch, leaving open the rest of the day for creativity. Their imaginations are vast and their energy never seems to flag. If the weather is nice, they enjoy biking in our driveway or running around outside, concocting elaborate scenarios that can fill an afternoon. My oldest has enjoyed listening to endless audiobooks and science podcasts as she tries to "reverse engineer" whatever broken electronic device we'll give her to dissemble. She's been growing in her piano skills because there is extended time at home to practice. My kindergartner is always seeking us out, enjoying our presence. She's gaining confidence as she takes ownership in her own schooling, impressing me with what she can accomplish with minimal guidance (don't get me wrong: encouragement is still needed, but far less than I originally anticipated). We have plenty of space in our home, but it's not unusual for them both to seek me out, even if it means they're crammed in my 100-square-foot craft room with me; while I work at my desk, they sprawl out to do schoolwork alongside, and it's a precious time to have together that wouldn't have been afforded to us without the Safer at Home order. We're playing board games on school nights and I'm willing to indulge in reading yet another chapter in our current bedtime read-aloud because we can have a more relaxed schedule. We love our daughters' school, teachers, and classmates, and yet my daughters are also benefiting from the organic learning that can take place when there is freedom in the day to explore interests.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN/FAMILY TO MOST REMEMBER ABOUT DURING THIS TIME?
I hope they look back and recall the fun we generated on our own. I hope this time grounds them in an appreciation for health, a feeling of love and safety, and a value for the blessings that are abundant around us, with an eye to helping others. When this experience is behind us, I hope they won't quickly take for granted play dates with friends, hugs with loved ones, and schooldays filled with activity and joy.

WHAT IS THE MOST CHALLENGING PART OF THIS CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC ARE YOU EXPERIENCING NOW?
It’s difficult for young children to understand why they can’t play with their friends. When a mood disorder requires significant physical activity for behavioral management, things get a little interesting!
WHAT IS THE MOST POSITIVE THING YOU HAVE EXPERIENCED DURING THIS TIME?
Slowing down to enjoy each other more - both quantitatively and qualitatively.
WHAT DO YOU WANT YOUR CHILDREN/FAMILY TO MOST REMEMBER ABOUT DURING THIS TIME?
The snuggles, the laughter, the family games, and the love.
